Flora’s Story

I think my fascination with reproductive health came from growing up on a farm and being exposed to the miracle of birth from such a young age. Getting hands-on experience with the difficulties of pregnancy and the birthing process, albeit from livestock, opened my eyes to the challenges of becoming a mother. From there, my interests shifted towards the human body as I watched myself develop into a young woman. I became fascinated with learning how the human body works and evolves from mere cells to a fully-fledged adult.

At 18, I left the hills of Wales and began my new chapter as a scientist. I moved to London and completed a Bachelor’s in Medical Physiology and a Masters in Women and Children’s Health at Kings College London. Since leaving university, alongside my independent research, I have continued with a research position at the Women & Children’s Health Department to keep up with evolving research.

Once I had thoroughly understood how bodily systems work in health and disease, I focused my studies solely on reproductive health. I have dedicated years to learning how age, illness, genetics, lifestyle factors, and nutrition impact conception, pregnancy, and fetal development.

Being a woman of reproductive age, I was astonished by how much I was previously unaware of and how little education women receive concerning their reproductive health.

I had suffered from a hormonal imbalance for years, with irregular periods, acne, weight fluctuations, endless gut issues and mood changes being a daily occurrence. After paying thousands of pounds for tests and consultations, doctors always advised me to return to the pill until I wanted to start a family. I felt gaslighted, and although I was alone with my struggles. Instead of giving up, I took back control of my reproductive health. I began implementing what I was learning in the literature into my own life. Within months, I felt revived; my skin began to clear, and I could track my cycle to the day. I had never felt better. Now, married and hoping to start a family, I feel like I have safeguarded my fertility to the best of my ability.

After sharing what I do for a living with the general public, women began sharing their struggles with getting pregnant. Often, they desperately sought advice from me on improving their chances of conception and having a healthy pregnancy. After advising these women, I searched the internet for comprehensive resources, finding almost none suitable and accessible. There was an urgent need to adapt current findings at the frontier of scientific research into a more graspable format that women could use to improve their chances of having a healthy baby.

Fruitful Flora stands to offer advice, support, and a community— all under one roof.
